Do you partake in Challenges? I’m obsessed with challenges! I’ve found that challenges help to motivate me to be a better, stronger runner.

In the spring of 2016, our Wellness group at work held a 10k-a-day (10,000 steps a day) challenge for two weeks.

At the time I was running three or four days a week and on the days I ran, hitting 10k was not a problem, but on my rest days, I was averaging 5 or 6k. So by adding a short walk at lunch or after work on those days, I was able to hit the 10k goal.

I completed the two week challenge and decided to see if I could hit 30 days. 30 days turned into 60 and 60 turned into 90. At 100 days I was starting my fall 1/2 marathon training and came across a 100 mile a month challenge on STRAVA! At the time, I was hitting 70 to 80 miles a month, so by adding a few miles each week, hitting the 100 miles a month was within reach. I did that for 5 months then found out about the Runners World fall 1-mile a day challenge from Thanksgiving day to New Year’s Day! Well, not being able to turn down a challenge, I added this, which made it easier to maintain my 100 miles a month challenge. Two challenges at one time! Bonus! See, obsessed! I told ya!
I finished the Runners World challenge by running a 5k on New Year’s Day. The following week I started to train for my first full marathon so I was able to keep hitting my goal of 100 miles a month.
After my marathon in April (6-months of hitting 100 miles a month , I scaled way back and only ran about 50 miles in May, which was a much needed break, but by the end of the month, I was getting restless and needed a new challenge. Just so happens Runners World offers a Spring Challenge to run 1-mile a day from Memorial Day to the 4th of July (37 days). You guessed it, yep, I’m on Day 16 of 37.

Do you participate in challenges?

If so, which ones?

  1. I do love me a good challenge!… but I dislike running streaks. It encourages me not to take a break, which is what I really should do. In fact, I shouldn’t run more than 3 days in a row, but sure enough, I had extra time this morning, and decided to get up and run. Should have been a rest day. My bad for running today!!!!! That’s why I need to stay on a training plan, because otherwise I just get up and run everyday and don’t take a break.
But good job on your streak!! It’s an awesome challenge for everyone else 🙂
